Breeding Farm Loop: Cakes, Incubators and When to Mutate
Quick answer
Build the farm, assign two parents, stock cake, and collect eggs. Cake type controls mutation odds, egg count, and passive fill rules.
Breeding is a production line: cakes in, eggs out, incubators hatching; chase mutations only when the parents are already worth copying.
This is the process guide, not the full mutation spreadsheet. Get a clean farm loop first; then use mutations and passives as the reason you keep hatching. Breeding is the only reliable way to stack passive skills, fix bad IVs on a species you use in combat, and eventually pull an anomalous mutation with a colored aura. All of that is downstream of a farm that never runs out of Cake or incubator space, so fix the pipeline before you start chasing a specific hatch.
Build the loop
- Place Breeding Farms with easy chest access for cakes.
- Keep a kitchen producing Cake so pens never idle.
- Park incubators next to the farms.
- Filter a cake chest so transporters restock pens automatically.
- Run a Ranch alongside your breeding base. Cake recipes lean on Milk, Egg and Honey, and a Breeding Farm running two pairs non-stop can out-consume a base with no dedicated Milk producer.
- Give each parent pair its own Breeding Farm slot rather than swapping pairs in and out. Swapping parents mid-cycle wastes the progress toward the next egg.

Cake needs Milk, Egg and Honey. See how to keep those flowing without babysitting the kitchen.

Structures
Assign a male and a female Pal to produce eggs. Cake is required for breeding.

Structures
Place a Pal Egg inside to incubate it.

Parents → egg → hatch
Assign two parents, supply Cake and wait for an egg. Move eggs to incubators and collect hatches on a timer. Use the breeding calculator when you need a specific child species.
The child species is not random. Every combination of two parent species resolves to a fixed result based on each Pal's breeding power value, and the same pair always produces the same child species. That is exactly why a calculator is worth using before you commit two good Pals to a pen: plug in the parents you own or the child you want, and work backward to the exact pair rather than guessing and re-rolling for hours. Egg rarity, and therefore incubation time, scales with how far the resulting species sits from the parents on the breeding power curve, so a small, mundane hatch clears an incubator far faster than a large, rare one.
Passives inherit from both parents with some randomness, and a hatched child can roll a mix of passives that neither parent had a perfect version of, plus a chance at brand-new IVs. That randomness is the whole reason you keep a farm running instead of hatching once and stopping: even with two ideal parents, you are still rolling dice on the exact passive combination and stat rolls each time an egg hatches. Keep the strongest results and feed weaker hatches back into your Ranch, into Handiwork, or release them once you have banked the passives you actually want.

Mutations matter after parents already have the passives and IVs you want to keep. Hatch normals to lock a line; then push volume when hunting anomalies.
Incubators: manual vs Large
The base Egg Incubator holds fewer eggs at once and is fine for a single active pair, but the moment you run two or more Breeding Farms at once you will outpace it. Upgrade to the Large Incubator as soon as you can afford the materials; it holds significantly more eggs in parallel, which matters most when you are chasing a low-odds mutation and want several attempts cooking at the same time instead of queuing them one after another. Placement matters too: keep incubators close enough to the farms that a transporter can shuttle eggs over quickly, since an egg sitting uncollected on the Breeding Farm is not incubating and is not on the clock yet.
Temperature and shelter do not affect incubation the way they affect Pal comfort elsewhere at your base, so you do not need to build the incubator area into a climate-controlled room. What actually matters is throughput: more incubator capacity means more eggs cooking simultaneously, which means more rolls at the passive combination or mutation you are chasing per real-world hour. If you are ever waiting on eggs with an idle Breeding Farm and spare incubator slots, that is lost throughput you cannot get back.
Common breeding mistakes
- Assigning two parents without stocking Cake first. The pair sits idle and the timer does not move until food is actually in range of the farm.
- Hatching a rare, slow egg before checking whether the resulting species and passives are actually what you wanted. Confirm the pair in the calculator first; a bad multi-hour hatch is a bigger loss than a bad quick one.
- Forgetting to move eggs into an incubator promptly. An egg sitting in your inventory or on the ground is not incubating.
- Breeding for a specific child without checking its Pal page first. Some species have combat stats, work suitability or Partner Skills that make them a poor use of a long incubation slot compared to a close substitute.
- Running only one Breeding Farm when you are chasing a rare mutation. Mutation odds are low per hatch, so throughput from two or three farms beats patience on one.
Cross-check a target child's stats, passives and work suitability before committing a pair.
