Palworld Best Base Pals: Early, Mid, and Endgame Staffing

Quick answer

It depends on stage. Early on you want any Pal that unblocks a structure: Handiwork, Kindling, Watering, Planting, Ranch, and Transport. Mid game you upgrade to Zoe on Handiwork and a Transport Pal at level 3 or higher. Endgame you want condensed specialists at high suitability levels rather than generalists.

A base does not need good Pals, it needs the right eleven slots filled in the right order. Here is the staffing list by progression stage, not by tier letter.

The short answer: early game you want Lamball, Cattiva, Tanzee, and a Ranch Pal. Mid game you replace them with Zoe for Handiwork, a Kindling Pal for the furnace, and a level 3 or better Transport Pal. Endgame you want condensed specialists that hit high suitability levels rather than generalists that cover three tasks badly.

The reason staffing lists disagree so much is that people rank Pals instead of ranking slots. A base has a fixed set of work tasks and a priority order the game applies automatically. Fill the tasks that block production first and the rest sorts itself out.

The live base-camp work task priority chart, straight from extracted game data.

Work task priority

Early game: level 1 to 20

At this stage you are not optimising, you are unblocking. Every structure you build needs a Pal that can physically operate it, and suitability level barely matters because your production volume is tiny.

  • One Handiwork Pal so the workbench never idles. Anything with Handiwork 2 or better works until Zoe arrives.
  • One Kindling Pal for the campfire and the primitive furnace. This is the most common early bottleneck.
  • One Watering Pal plus one Planting Pal, or the Plantation produces nothing.
  • One Ranch Pal. Ranch output feeds Cake production later, and Cake is the whole breeding gate.
  • One Transport Pal with the highest Transport level you own, because carry capacity per trip scales hard with level.

Mid game: level 20 to 50

This is where you start replacing rather than adding. Zoe becomes catchable after the first tower battle at the Rayne Syndicate and is the single biggest crafting upgrade available at that point. The other change is that suitability level starts to matter more than headcount.

  • Zoe on Handiwork. She carries the crafting base from the teens into the fifties.
  • Upgrade Transport to level 3 or higher. Level 5 handles up to 40 items per trip, which removes trips rather than speeding them up.
  • Add a dedicated Mining Pal once you have an ore base. Mining is a work action, so work speed passives genuinely help here.
  • Add Cooling if you are running a refrigerator or a cake loop. Cooling is easy to forget and silently spoils food.
  • Add a Medicine Production Pal before you touch the Ancient Workbench track, since that bench demands it.

Endgame: level 50 plus

Endgame staffing is about suitability level, not species. A condensed Pal at suitability level 4 beats an uncondensed Pal at level 3 on the same task every time, and the condenser is the only way to push past a species cap. This is also where you stop mixing roles.

  • One specialist per critical task, condensed as far as you can afford. Generalists cause task thrashing.
  • Orserk or another high-level Electricity Pal on the Power Generator. Electric production gates everything late.
  • Nocturnal Pals on the tasks you want running overnight. Non-nocturnal workers sleep and output stalls.
  • Work handbooks from the Medal Vendor at 300 Medals each permanently expand which tasks a Pal can take.
  • Sanity management. A base full of overworked Pals produces less than a smaller base full of rested ones.

Base Pal sanity

The passive that does not do what you think

Artisan and Serious raise work speed, which affects work actions such as crafting, mining, and watering. They do not speed up transporting, because transport is a movement task rather than a work action. Breeding Artisan onto your hauler is the most common wasted breeding project in the game.

What are the best base Pals in Palworld?
It depends on stage. Early on you want any Pal that unblocks a structure: Handiwork, Kindling, Watering, Planting, Ranch, and Transport. Mid game you upgrade to Zoe on Handiwork and a Transport Pal at level 3 or higher. Endgame you want condensed specialists at high suitability levels rather than generalists. Work task priority
How many Pals should I have working at a base in Palworld?
Fill every work task your built structures require rather than chasing a headcount. A smaller base with one specialist per critical task out-produces a full base of generalists, because generalists thrash between tasks and finish none of them quickly.
Does Artisan help my base Pals in Palworld?
Artisan helps work actions such as crafting, mining, and watering, but it does nothing for transporting. Transport throughput is driven by Transport suitability level, movement speed, and whether the Pal is nocturnal. Work speed and transport
Is condensing base Pals worth it in Palworld?
Yes, because condensing raises work suitability level and that is the only way to push a Pal past its base cap on a task. A condensed specialist at level 4 will out-produce an uncondensed Pal at level 3 on the same structure. Suitability and condensing
