Palworld Ancient Hatchery vs Breeding Farm: Which to Build First
Quick answer
Technology level 76 on the Ancient tree, and it costs 8 Ancient Technology Points. That makes it the most expensive breeding unlock in the game, so most players never need it.
Both buildings look like egg stuff. One unlocks at level 19 for 2 Ancient points and the other at level 76 for 8, so picking wrong costs you a lot more than a wall slot.
The Breeding Farm makes eggs. Incubators hatch eggs. The Ancient Hatchery does both at once, which is why it sits at the very top of the Technology tree and costs more Ancient Technology Points than any other breeding structure. If you are choosing between them, you are almost certainly not choosing at all: you need the Breeding Farm now and the Hatchery much later.
Breeding Farm
Tech 19 - 2 Ancient points
Assign one male and one female Pal to produce eggs. Placing Cake in the facility is required for production.
Ancient Hatchery
Tech 76 - 8 Ancient points
An advanced breeding facility of ancient civilization technology, enclosed in electronic glass. It fully automates everything from egg production to incubation at high speed, and increases the inheritance rate of rare skills. Pals are managed through holograms, it requires minimal pasture space.
What each building actually does
Breeding Farm, Technology level 19
Two Pals of compatible gender go in, a cake goes in the chest, and eggs come out on the ground. That is the whole job. It does not hatch anything, so a Breeding Farm on its own produces a pile of eggs and nothing else. Costs 2 Ancient Technology Points on the Ancient tree.
Ancient Hatchery, Technology level 76
The endgame building that combines large-scale electric incubation with breeding in one footprint. It is the last breeding structure you will unlock and it costs 8 Ancient Technology Points, the most expensive breeding unlock in the game. Build it when you are running a dedicated breeding base at high volume, not because it sounds better.
The incubator ladder in between
Most of your breeding life happens on incubators, not the Hatchery. The ladder matters more than the endgame building because these are what actually turn eggs into Pals for sixty levels.
- Egg Incubator, Technology level 10, 1 Ancient point. One egg at a time. Build several.
- Electric Egg Incubator, level 36, 5 Ancient points. Faster hatching, needs power.
- Large Incubator, level 48, 5 Ancient points. Multiple eggs per structure.
- Large-scale Electric Egg Incubator, level 58, 5 Ancient points. The workhorse for serious breeders.
- Ancient Hatchery, level 76, 8 Ancient points. Breeding plus large-scale electric hatching combined.
Egg Incubator
Tech 10
Used for incubating a Pal Egg. If a Pal Egg is left in it, it will automatically hatch after some time has passed.
Electric Egg Incubator
Tech 36
Device for incubating Pal eggs. Requires electricity, but automatically keeps the inside of the incubator at appropriate temperatures.
Large Incubator
Tech 48
Device for incubating Pal eggs. It automatically maintains a suitable temperature and can hatch multiple eggs at once.
Large-scale Electric Egg Incubator
Tech 58
Device for incubating Pal eggs. While power supply is required, it allows multiple eggs to be incubated simultaneously at the optimal temperature.

Open TechnologyRecommended build order
If you want to breed at all
- Level 10: one Egg Incubator so eggs you find in the world stop rotting in a chest.
- Level 19: Breeding Farm. This is the real unlock. Everything downstream depends on it.
- Level 19 to 36: build three or four more basic Egg Incubators. Volume beats speed early because cake supply is your bottleneck, not hatch time.
- Level 36 or 48: move to Electric or Large incubators once you have a stable power grid and a cake line.
- Level 58: Large-scale Electric Egg Incubator becomes your default. Most breeders stop here permanently.
- Level 76: Ancient Hatchery, only if you are running a dedicated breeding base and have Ancient points to spare.
If you only breed occasionally
Breeding Farm plus two or three basic Egg Incubators covers a casual save completely. Spend your Ancient Technology Points on production and combat unlocks instead. The Ancient Hatchery is a throughput upgrade, and throughput only matters if you are hatching dozens of eggs chasing passives.
Base layout that stops the flow from stalling
- Put the Breeding Farm and your incubator bank in the same room. Every step between them is a step you take manually.
- Keep a dedicated cake chest at the Breeding Farm and a dedicated egg chest next to the incubators. Mixed storage is how eggs get lost.
- Feed the cake line from a nearby ranch and plantation rather than hauling ingredients across the base.
- Do not put the incubator bank outside your wall line. Base raids will happily destroy a week of breeding.

- What level is the Ancient Hatchery in Palworld?
- Technology level 76 on the Ancient tree, and it costs 8 Ancient Technology Points. That makes it the most expensive breeding unlock in the game, so most players never need it. Open Technology
- Do I need the Ancient Hatchery in Palworld?
- No. A Breeding Farm at level 19 plus a bank of incubators covers everything breeding does. The Ancient Hatchery combines breeding and large-scale electric hatching in one footprint, which only pays off on a dedicated high-volume breeding base.
- What level do you unlock the Breeding Farm in Palworld?
- Technology level 19 for 2 Ancient Technology Points. It produces eggs but does not hatch them, so pair it with at least one Egg Incubator, which unlocks at level 10 for 1 point. Breeding Farm guide
- Which incubator should I use in Palworld?
- Build several basic Egg Incubators early since cake supply limits you more than hatch speed. Move to the Large-scale Electric Egg Incubator at level 58 once you have stable power, and stop there unless you are chasing the Ancient Hatchery at 76. Open Technology
