Early Ranch Setup in Palworld: Your First Working Ranch, Step by Step

Quick answer

Level 5, for 2 Technology Points. Unlock the Wooden Chest (level 2), Straw Pal Bed (level 3), and Feed Box (level 4) first so the pen works from day one.

The Ranch unlocks at level 5 for 2 Technology Points. Build it next to a Feed Box, beds, and a chest, pen four starter Pals, and Eggs, Wool, Milk, and Gold Coin start piling up before your first boss.

A Ranch is the first structure in Palworld that makes things while you are away. Pals with the right Partner Skill drop an item every so often, and those items pile up on the Ranch floor. The trick is building the support pieces first, so your ranchers stay fed, rested, and in range, then picking Pals whose drops you will actually use.

This page is the setup walkthrough: unlock order, placement, the first four Pals, and what each output is worth. The Best Ranch Pals ranking covers the full Early, Mid, and End list once your pen is running.

Unlock order: levels 2 to 7

Every piece of a working ranch sits in the first page of the Technology tree. Spend points in this order and you will have a full setup the moment you hit level 5.

  • Level 2: Wooden Chest (1 point). Haulers need somewhere to drop Ranch items.
  • Level 3: Straw Pal Bed (2 points). Base Pals recover SAN when they sleep in beds at night.
  • Level 4: Feed Box (2 points). Pals at the base eat from it when hungry.
  • Level 5: Ranch (2 points). The pen itself. Berry Plantation unlocks at the same level for 2 points.
  • Level 7: Monitoring Stand (2 points). Lets you allow or forbid work types per Pal later.
Wooden Chest

Wooden Chest

Level 2 · 1 point

Stores items. Made from wood, it breaks easily. It's probably not the best thing to store valuables in.

Straw Pal Bed

Straw Pal Bed

Level 3 · 2 points

A straw bed for Pals. Pals can rest on it when injured, or to sleep at night. It isn't soft, but it's better than nothing.

Feed Box

Feed Box

Level 4 · 2 points

A box for storing Pal food. Pals can feed from it when hungry. Make sure to keep it well-stocked to keep your Pals happy.

Ranch

Ranch

Level 5 · 2 points

Farm for raising sheep and fowl-like Pals. Assign a Pal with the appropriate Partner Skill to a farm to produce items.

Monitoring Stand

Monitoring Stand

Level 7 · 2 points

Command your Pals to work on various things inside a base. You can allow or prohibit individual kinds of work.

Red Berries

Red Berries

Cheap Feed Box filler

A versatile ingredient that is delicious raw or cooked. They can be found anywhere on the island.

First ranch build order. Tap any structure for its item page.

Build your first ranch in six steps

  • Pick flat ground inside your base circle, close to the Palbox, with room for the pen and its support pieces side by side.
  • Place the Feed Box within a short walk of the Ranch. A hungry rancher walks off to eat and stops producing until it gets back.
  • Put one Straw Pal Bed per Pal nearby. Without a Pal Bed, Pals cannot sleep soundly and recover no SAN at night.
  • Drop a Wooden Chest beside the pen so items travel a few steps, not across the whole base.
  • Build the Ranch, then throw each rancher onto it. Check the Pal shows the Farming job and not an idle icon.
  • Stock the Feed Box with Red Berries or cooked food before you log off. Refill it every time you pass through.

How many Pals? Start with three or four. That covers Eggs, Wool, and a Gold Coin or sphere source without draining your food supply. Only add a fifth or sixth rancher when a recipe is actually waiting on that item.

The first Pals to put in the pen

These are early catches, most of them from the grassland around the starting area. Each one has Farming, so it works the Ranch, and a Partner Skill that drops a useful item. Farming level only speeds up the drop cycle, so a Lv1 rancher still pays.

What each output is worth and what it crafts

Values below are the listed Gold value on each item page. Selling is fine for spare stacks, but most early outputs are worth more as crafting materials.

  • Egg (200 Gold): Fried Egg at the Campfire uses 1. Omelet uses 2 at the Cooking Pot. Cake uses 8.
  • Wool (200 Gold): 2 Wool make 1 Cloth (480 Gold), unlocked at level 4. Melpaca Saddle takes 5 Wool.
  • Milk (200 Gold): Cake uses 7 Milk alongside 8 Eggs, 5 Flour, 8 Red Berries, and 2 Honey.
  • Flame Organ (300 Gold): 1 Flame Organ plus 2 Wood and 2 Stone makes 10 Fire Arrows at level 6. Heat Resistant Pelt Armor at level 16 needs 4.
  • Pal Sphere (80 Gold) and Mega Sphere (460 Gold) from Vixy: keep them for captures instead of crafting your own.
  • Gold Coin from Mau: spend it at merchants on Leather, Aquatic Pal Fluids, or spheres from the Vagrant Trader.

Why ranchers rarely wander off

Farming (Ranch) sits at priority 5 on the default work task chart. Only Defense, Aid, Extinguish, Construction, and an Assigned Workstation beat it. So a Lamball with Handiwork and Transport will ranch first and craft or haul only when the Ranch has nothing for it. That is great for the pen, and bad if Lamball was meant to be your only crafter.

Common first-ranch mistakes

  • Building the Ranch at the edge of the base. Items dropped far from a chest sit on the floor until someone hauls them.
  • Skipping beds. Pals without a Pal Bed recover no SAN overnight, and that debt keeps growing.
  • Counting on multi-role starters for other jobs. Lamball, Depresso, and Flambelle all ranch before they craft or haul.
  • Filling the pen with Wool before you need Cloth. Match drops to what your next recipes use.
  • Letting the Feed Box run dry overnight. Mozzarina eats more than the Lv1 starters.

Quick answers

  • Ranch unlock: level 5, 2 Technology Points.
  • Support pieces: Wooden Chest (level 2), Straw Pal Bed (3), Feed Box (4), Monitoring Stand (7).
  • First four Pals: Chikipi, Lamball, Vixy, and Mau.
  • Best early value: Wool crafted into Cloth, and Flame Organ from Flambelle.
  • Cinnamoth adds +1 Farming to every other base Pal once you can catch her.
