Palworld Artisan, Musclehead, and Vanguard Implants Explained
Quick answer
Artisan is a rank 3 work speed passive. It speeds up work actions such as crafting, mining, logging, watering, and kindling. It does not affect transporting, because transport is a movement task rather than a work action.
These three implants get bought interchangeably and they do completely unrelated things. One speeds up crafting, one trades work for combat, and one buffs you rather than the Pal.
Artisan is a rank 3 work speed passive that makes a Pal craft, mine, and water faster. Musclehead is a rank 2 passive that converts a Pal toward combat at the expense of work output. Vanguard is a rank 3 trainer passive that raises the player's attack while the Pal is in your party. They are bought from the same counters and they solve three different problems.
The confusion is understandable. All three appear as implants in the same vendor list, all three sound like upgrades, and the game does not group them by what they affect.

Implant: Artisan
Rank 3, work speed

Implant: Musclehead
Rank 2, combat trade

Implant: Vanguard
Rank 3, player attack
Artisan: work actions only
Artisan raises work speed, which the game applies to work actions. That means crafting at a bench, mining a node, logging, watering, planting, kindling, cooling, and medicine production. It does not apply to transporting, because transport is a movement task rather than a work action. Breeding or implanting Artisan onto a hauler is the most common wasted upgrade in the game.
- Best target: your Handiwork Pal, because crafting is the task most often bottlenecked by speed rather than headcount.
- Second best: a Mining Pal, since ore nodes are work actions and yield scales with how many swings land per minute.
- Never: a Transport Pal. Use Swift, Runner, or a higher Transport suitability level instead.
- Serious is the rank 2 version of the same line, useful as a placeholder.

Work speed vs transportMusclehead: a trade, not an upgrade
Musclehead sits at rank 2 rather than rank 3, and that ranking is honest. It pushes a Pal toward physical combat performance while making it worse at base work. On a Pal you only ever field in fights, that trade is fine. On a Pal that does both jobs, you have just broken half of its usefulness.
- Best target: a dedicated combat Pal that never gets assigned to a base.
- Worst target: a high suitability worker you occasionally take on trips.
- Check the Pal's work suitability before implanting. If it has good levels on anything, you are throwing them away.
- If you want pure combat gain without the downside, Ferocious at rank 3 is the cleaner pick.
Vanguard: it buffs you, not the Pal
Vanguard is a trainer passive. It raises the player's attack while the Pal carrying it is in your party. The Pal's own stats do not change. That makes it a party composition tool rather than a Pal upgrade, and it means a Vanguard Pal is valuable even if it never lands a hit.
- Best target: a Pal you keep in party for its partner skill anyway. Vanguard is pure upside on a support slot.
- Stronghold Strategist is the defence equivalent, also rank 3.
- Motivational Leader is the base work equivalent, raising work speed for your other Pals.
- Mine Foreman and Logging Foreman are the task-specific trainer passives, both rank 3.
- Trainer passives generally do not stack with themselves, so two Vanguard Pals is not double the bonus.

Passive tier listWhere to buy implants
- Bounty Vendor: implants at 15 Bounty Proof each. The cheapest route if you already run bounty targets.
- Arena Vendor: implants at 50 Battle Tickets. The fallback when your ticket pile is deeper than your token pile.
- Both counters are grind-gated rather than stock-limited, so the real cost is time per token.
- Disposable versions exist for many passives and are generally easier to acquire in bulk than reusable ones.

Successful Bounty Token
15 per implant
A token of having defeated a bounty target. By giving it to a Vigilante Bounty Officer in villages or towns, it can be exchanged for a reward.

Battle Ticket

- Is Musclehead good in Palworld?
- Musclehead sits at rank 2 and is a trade rather than a pure upgrade. It pushes a Pal toward combat performance while reducing base work output, so it belongs on a dedicated fighter and not on a Pal with useful work suitability levels.
- What does the Vanguard implant do in Palworld?
- Vanguard is a rank 3 trainer passive that raises the player's attack while the carrying Pal is in your party. The Pal's own stats are unchanged, which makes it ideal for a support slot Pal you keep in party for its partner skill. Partner skills and stacking
