Palworld Base Defense: Walls and Turrets That Work

Quick answer

Wood walls are fine for the first few raids, but climb to Stone and then Metal as soon as you can. Metal walls hold up far better once raid waves scale with your base's Work Pal levels.

Pretty bases die first. Walls that choke spawns and turrets with power and sightlines are what actually survive raids.

Base defense is geometry plus power. Build walls that force raid waves into kill zones, place turrets with clean sightlines, and keep Generation and defense Pals actually assigned when the wave hits.

Walls

  • Climb the wall ladder (Wood toward Metal) as raids get serious.
  • Choke entrances. Do not leave four open courtyards because it looked nice.
  • Keep incubators, cake chests, and rare benches behind the wall line.
  • Repair after every raid before the next timer.

Turrets

  • Unlock Mounted Crossbow, Machine Gun, and Missile Launcher rows in Technology as you tier up.
  • Give turrets power and overlapping fields of fire on the choke.
  • Do not hide turrets behind your own decorative clutter.
  • Handiwork posts and defense-capable Pals cover what turrets miss, including vertical approaches.

Work priority

Reading your base's weak points

Walk your own perimeter before a raid finds the gap for you. Look for the spot you would sneak in if you were an attacker: a low wall section, an unguarded back door, a cliff edge nobody bothered to fence. That is where waves will funnel once the front door is locked down. Fix the obvious hole before you add a second layer of turrets nobody needed.

Power and upkeep

  • Turrets need power to fire. A brownout during a raid is the same as having no turret at all, so keep generation ahead of demand on any base that expects waves.
  • Repair walls and turrets right after a raid, not before the next one starts. Handiwork Pals locked to defense structures clear this queue fast if nothing else is competing for their time.
  • Ammo-fed weapons (rather than the power-only mounted turrets) still need a stocked magazine. Check that queue too if a turret goes quiet mid-fight.

Common defense mistakes

  • Building for looks first and defense second. A base with four open courtyards will always take more damage than one with a single funnel.
  • Placing turrets so close together that one enemy hit can knock out your whole cluster. Spread coverage instead of stacking it.
  • Leaving Work Pals on Focus on work when a raid is already inbound. Flip to Attack invaders before the wave lands, not after.
  • Skipping traps entirely. A Bear Trap or Hanging Trap on the approach path softens a pack before it ever reaches your wall line.

Common questions

Short answers for searches that should land here, with links to the item, map pin, or related guide when you need more detail.

What is the best early wall material in Palworld?
Wood walls are fine for the first few raids, but climb to Stone and then Metal as soon as you can. Metal walls hold up far better once raid waves scale with your base's Work Pal levels. Base raids explained
Do turrets use ammo even when idle?
No. 1.0 turrets only spend resources when they actually fire, so leaving them built and powered costs nothing while no raid is happening.
Why do my turrets stop firing during a raid?
Usually power. Check that generation is covering the turret line first. If power is fine, confirm the turret still has line of sight and has not been knocked out by melee attackers reaching it directly. Work priority
How many turrets do I actually need for a raid?
Fewer than most players think if the layout funnels waves into a tight kill zone. A well-placed choke with two or three turrets often outperforms a sprawling wall covered in a dozen turrets with gaps between them.
