Pal Work Researching Guide: Research Lab Benefits, Tips, and Tricks
Quick answer
Pal Labor Research Lab guide: work-speed research, Silo Flower Bed and other base buff structures (do not stack), Monitoring Stand locks, and subject order tips.
The Research Lab is how you permanently upgrade every work suitability in the base. Most players start a subject, then watch their Handiwork Pals walk off to a workbench.
The Pal Labor Research Lab (Technology level 19) is a facility for researching Pal tasks. Finish subjects for permanent work-speed and craft bonuses, and unlock placeable base buff structures like the Silo, Flower Bed, Large Toolbox, and Flame Cauldron. The Lab is strong. It is also the first structure players accuse of being "broken" when Handiwork researchers wander back to a craft bench.
Pal Labor Research Lab
Structures
A facility for conducting research on the various tasks of Pals. By assigning tasks to Pals in this facility, research progresses, granting various benefits.
Monitoring Stand
Structures
Command your Pals to work on various things inside a base. You can allow or prohibit individual kinds of work.
Silo
Structures
Place in base to improve planting speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Flower Bed
Structures
Place in base to improve gathering speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
What researching unlocks
- Each subject matches a work suitability (Handiwork, Kindling, Watering, Planting, Mining, Gathering, Logging, Medicine, Cooling, Generating Electricity, and the rest of the Lab list).
- Finished research permanently strengthens that work track for your bases (work speed, harvest yield, craft savings, incubation, expeditions, and more depending on the subject). Treat it like account progression, not a one-off buff food.
- Late subjects on each track unlock a Technology structure you place in a base for that work type's speed buff (Silo, Flower Bed, Large Toolbox, and friends).
- Higher suitability level on the assigned Pal speeds the subject. It does not raise Lab priority above other jobs of the same type.
- Greyed-out portraits usually mean the Pal is under-leveled for that research tier. Raise suitability or pick another worker.
Base work buff structures (one counts per base)
Lab research unlocks these placeables. Put one in the base that needs that job. The buff applies to that work type for Pals in that base only. Placing a second copy of the same structure does nothing. Different buff buildings can sit together (Silo plus Flower Bed is fine).
Large Toolbox
Structures
Place in base to improve handiwork speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Flame Cauldron
Structures
Place in base to improve fire-making speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Water Fountain
Structures
Place in base to improve watering speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Flower Bed
Structures
Place in base to improve gathering speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
- Large Toolbox: Handiwork speed (Handiwork research unlock).
- Flame Cauldron: Kindling / fire-making speed (Kindling research unlock).
- Water Fountain: Watering speed (Watering research unlock).
- Flower Bed: Gathering speed (Planting research unlock).
Silo
Structures
Place in base to improve planting speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Stump And Axe
Structures
Place in base to improve logging speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Mining Cart
Structures
Place in base to improve mining speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Electric Pylon
Structures
Place in base to improve electricity generating speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
- Silo: Planting speed (Planting research unlock).
- Stump And Axe: Logging speed (Lumbering research unlock).
- Mining Cart: Mining speed (Mining research unlock).
- Electric Pylon: Generating Electricity speed (Generating Electricity research unlock).
Witch Cauldron
Structures
Place in base to improve medicine manufacturing speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
Snowman
Structures
Place in base to improve cooling speed. Placing more than one has no additional effect.
- Witch Cauldron: Medicine manufacturing speed (Medicine research unlock).
- Snowman: Cooling speed (Cooling research unlock).
- Build one of each type you care about in every active production base. A quiet research-only base can skip them until that plot starts crafting.

Open technologyWhy research loses to normal jobs
The Lab is not its own row on the work-task priority chart. When you start Handiwork research, Handiwork Pals treat the Lab like Handiwork. Workbenches and Production Assembly Lines sit on that same urgency band. If a craft queue is open, the Lab loses. There is no secret "Research" priority slot under Cooling.

Work task priority guideKeep research running
- Fixed-assign a Pal to the Lab from a Monitoring Stand (or throw-and-lock). Assigned Workstation outranks wandering job picks.
- On that researcher, disable every suitability you do not want so only the active research subject remains.
- Pause big craft queues while a long subject is finishing, or move the Lab to a quiet research base with almost no competing stations.
- Multi-Lab bases work if each Lab has its own locked crew. Sharing one Handiwork squad across Lab and assembly lines is how abandonment starts.
Step-by-step Monitoring Stand assigns for Lab, Transport, and locks.
Monitoring Stand how to useSubject order and tips
- Early: Handiwork and Kindling pay for crafting and smelting speed, and unlock Large Toolbox and Flame Cauldron for those bases.
- Mid: Planting, Watering, Mining, and Logging once farms and ore lines matter. Grab Silo, Flower Bed, Water Fountain, Mining Cart, and Stump And Axe as those subjects finish.
- Late: Medicine, Cooling, and Generating Electricity when endgame stations and power demand them (Witch Cauldron, Snowman, Electric Pylon).
- Do not start a subject you cannot staff. An empty Lab is just furniture.
- Condenser stars and Work Suitability books still help the researchers you lock to the Lab. Research benefits, buff structures, and personal suitability stack as separate systems.
