The Ring of Mercy Loophole, Capturing Without Killing

Optimized endgame teams kill rare Alphas by accident, the Ring of Mercy fixes it, but only up to a point.

The Ring of Mercy is designed to keep a capture target alive by preventing your direct hits from landing the killing blow. For overtuned endgame teams that delete rare Alphas in a single burst, it is close to mandatory, but it has one specific hole.

The direct-hit rule

The ring intervenes on direct damage. When your attack would reduce the target to zero, it is clamped so the Pal survives at minimal HP, ready to catch.

Where it fails: damage over time

The ring does not protect against damage-over-time effects. Burn, Poison and similar status conditions tick independently of your direct hits, and those ticks can still kill the target after the ring has done its job. If you run status weapons or DoT skills, strip the effect or wait it out before you close in on a rare capture.

Check which spheres and gear help you capture cleanly.
